Malapascua is a single-purpose island. People come for the thresher sharks, structure the week around a boat that leaves before dawn, and treat everything else as filler. That is a fair description and it is also why the island works.
Two things have changed since most guides were written. The sharks are no longer at Monad Shoal, and the site they moved to is shallow enough for an Open Water certification.
Getting to Malapascua from Cebu
The island sits off the northern tip of Cebu and the trip is a bus followed by a boat. Budget five to seven hours door to door and leave early.
The bus to Maya, then the banca
Ceres and White Stallion run from Cebu North Bus Terminal to Maya, roughly four hours on a direct non-air-conditioned service, for around 255 PHP. The air-conditioned buses cost a little more and stop more.
From Maya the public banca crosses in about 35 minutes. Around 340 PHP covers the crossing plus the environmental and port fees, which are collected together.

Why you should not arrive late
The public banca stops running in the late afternoon. Miss it and you are chartering a boat at several times the price or sleeping in Maya, which is not a place anyone plans to sleep.
Leaving Cebu City in the morning is not caution, it is the whole plan.

Diving with thresher sharks at Kimud Shoal
This is the reason the island has dive shops at all, and the single most out-of-date fact in most published guides.
The sharks moved, and it changed who can dive them
In September 2022 the threshers left Monad Shoal over a few weeks and settled on Kimud Shoal, a plateau roughly 45 minutes out towards Leyte. Nobody has established the cause with certainty.
Kimud sits at 12 to 23 metres, with cleaning stations reported between 14 and 20 metres. At Monad the animals were rarely shallower than 30 metres, which is why that site needed an Advanced certification and Kimud does not.
Guides written before 2023 still send Advanced divers to Monad Shoal for the threshers. The sharks moved to Kimud in September 2022, and Kimud is shallow enough for an Open Water certification.
Monad Shoal is now the tiger shark site
Monad has not gone quiet, it has changed occupant. Tiger sharks are seen there, at a rate measured in roughly one sighting a week rather than one a dive.
It remains a deep site and a different proposition. Do not book it expecting threshers.
The 05:00 boat, and what it means for your week
Thresher dives leave between 05:00 and 08:00, because that is when the animals come up to be cleaned. Over three or four days that dictates your entire rhythm, including when you eat and when you sleep.

Kalanggaman, the sandbar off Leyte
Kalanggaman is the postcard: a narrow island with a long sand spit running off each end into clear water. It belongs to the municipality of Palompon, in Leyte, not to Cebu.
What it costs, and the gap that surprises people
Entrance was 1 000 PHP per person for a foreign day visitor and 1 500 PHP for an overnight stay. Filipino visitors pay 150 PHP.
That gap is set by the municipality and is not negotiable at the landing. Joiner trips from Malapascua ran around 1 800 PHP including lunch and fees, which is the simplest way to do it.
The crossing is weather-dependent
It is 1 h 30 to 2 h each way on open water. Trips are called off when the sea is up, and that happens often enough that you should not put Kalanggaman on your last day.
Treat it as a bonus that needs a spare day in the plan, not as a fixture.
Staying and paying on the island
Malapascua is small, walkable end to end, and concentrated around Bounty Beach where most of the accommodation and the dive shops sit.
Cash, and the absence of alternatives
Card acceptance is patchy and cash machines on the island are not something to rely on. Draw what you need in Cebu City before you get on the bus.
- Dive packages, boat fees and park fees are commonly cash only.
- The Kalanggaman entrance is collected in cash at the landing.
- Power interruptions are routine, and they take card terminals with them.
What a week actually costs

The lines people forget when they budget a week here are the ones collected outside the dive shop.
- Transport at both ends, roughly 600 PHP each way for bus and banca combined.
- Marine park fees, charged per dive day rather than per dive.
- Kalanggaman, which is a 1 000 PHP entrance before the boat is counted.
- A spare day for weather, which costs a night either way.
Build those in and the arithmetic stops surprising you.
